College Surroundings

June 22, 2007 - 2:20am | Posted by Don

While Laura was doing her last job search, we spent quite a bit of time searching online trying to find information about the areas surrounding the colleges she was applying at. We'd be living on campus, but since neither of us are students, we're more concerned with the surrounding areas of campus than the on-campus offerings.

After hours of searching and coming up with very little, I was getting very frustrated and decided to make my own site, that could be a single reference site for colleges all around the country... where students could just log in, add listings of the places they liked to hang out, and then people looking to go to school there, or move to that area, could easily see what kind of stuff they can look forward to.

I figured this would be mostly helpful to high school students looking at colleges... they could get an idea of things they wanted to check out before going there... as opposed to getting to school and not knowing anything around. Not that knowing there's 10 bars and 3 concert venues within walking distance from the college will make or break anyone's college decision... but it's something I would have liked to have known before getting to Ball State and not knowing anything outside campus. Instead of not knowing about Carter's Nearly World-Famous Hot Dogs until my junior year... I could have gone in knowing about it and had an extra 3 years of the best chili/cheese/kraut dogs ever!

So now, that site is complete. Ready for the world. I give you... College Surroundings!

Maybe it's dumb and no one will use it... maybe it'll be huge and have 2,384,734 visitors per day... don't know, and don't care. It gave me something to do in my spare time =)

If anybody out there would like to sign up to add things to it, but don't have a .edu email address (I have it limited to only people with .edu email addresses right now to try to avoid abuse), just email me and I'll hook you up.
