Water

I am so freakin sick of water!

So when we bought the house, the lady we bought it from disclosed a small trickle in the basement. She said it only happened when it rained REALLY hard, and it was never more than she could just wipe up with a towel. Well... that trickle does exist, and only when it rains really hard, and it's not very much. But unfortunately, we've discovered a much larger trickle from somewhere else in the basement, that she apparently didn't know about. It's in an area back by the water heater and circuit breakers, so not an area that she probably went to regularly. As you may or may not know, we've had a TON of freaking rain in the past couple months... so this water in the basement shit is really pissing me off. We've got a plan in place now to eliminate the water problem... hopefully can start it in the next couple weeks, but in the meantime, it's driving me crazy. Oh yeah, we've also got mold in the basement and garage because of the moisture problem... so we'll have to take care of that too.

So then we noticed that every time the upstairs shower was used, there'd be a puddle of water in the basement directly below the shower drain. Laura's dad came down one weekend to help us look at that, and he replaced some of the drain pipe that was rusted through. That helped greatly, but we still have a little bit of water coming from somewhere everytime someone showers.

Then during the last big rain, where we got 4 inches in 2 days, we had another problem. We have some concrete steps and a retaining wall leading from the backyard down to the basement. It has a drain at the bottom, for rainwater. Well, that drain got clogged up, so the water was just building up in the concrete box, until it finally started just pouring in under the door leading into the basement. Luckily, I think after we cleaned out the drain, that problem is fixed. Still annoying.

And then last night... the water being drained out of our washing machine got clogged with all the lint and stuff from the towels we were washing (That we had been using to soak up the water leaking in from the walls), and so it overflowed all over.

Luckily... this is all happening in the 10% of the basement that's not finished... so it's not causing HUGE problems (Other than mold, and we might have to replace a small drywall wall on my computer room)... but I'm getting real tired of it. We're planning on digging a french drain around at least 2 sides of the house, so the water that just pools up in our yard around the foundation can drain out to the street, and then also installing a sump pump in the basement to get rid of the water that does get in. We also bought a dehumidifier to put down there. Hopefully we can get started on the drainage and sump pump stuff in a few weeks.

I'm ready for a few weeks of nice sunny weather.
