Ace of Cakes

So, Laura was in charge of making a birthday cake for Ella's (Our niece) 4th birthday party. Ella was very specific in that she wanted a Nemo cake, with Nemo (Clown fish), Dori (Blue fish), Bubbles (Yellow fish), Bruce (Shark), and a treasure chest on it. We watch the Food Network show Ace of Cakes all the time, and decided to see how awesome a cake we could make.

We got to planning, and we decided we were going to stack a few sheet cakes on top of each other, and trim down the top to give it the look of a treasure chest, and then ice it and put the characters on it

Our journey started at the Disney store, where we found Nemo characters, but they only had Nemo, Bruce, and Squirt (Turtle). So we picked them up, and figured we'd just have to go with what we had. I then turned around, and saw something that inspired me. It was a Nemo bubble blowing machine! Ella loves bubbles, so I immediately starting thinking of ways to implement this into the cake. Laura and I talked for a bit, and figured it out.

We stacked 4 sheet cakes on top of each other, cut out a section of cake in the back, and placed the bubble blower in it. The bubble blower was JUST above the 4th cake... it worked perfectly. The next problem was how to make it a treasure chest. Our original plan wouldn't work, because of the bubble machine. So my job for Friday (Since I don't work anymore), was to figure out how to make the treasure chest lid. I went to Michael's craft store Friday morning, and was going to buy some pieces of styrofoam to make the lid with, but it was too expensive... there was no way I was spending $60 on styrofoam to make a lid for a birthday cake. I did, however, pick up some pearl necklace things, and a bag of sea shells to add into the design.

I got home, and pulled out some old cardboard boxes, figured I could cut them up to make the lid with. It would be light enough to be held up somehow, and we could shape it pretty well to what we needed. It took me about an hour, but I got a lid made.

That night, we worked until about 1am covering everything with fondant and finalizing the plans. There were some rough spots, some adjustments needed to be made to the design, and a lot of wine was consumed.

The next morning, we got up, finished up the details, and got it all put together. We have now made a cake that involved power tools and batteries... mwahahaha!

Best birthday cake EVER! Duff would be proud!
