Bad Luck

June 24, 2009 - 8:05pm | Posted by Don

I'm starting to get a little irritated. Laura and I have had some bad luck in the 2 months I've been unemployed

- The reverse sensors in my car went out (Things that beep as I get close to something in reverse... minor problem, but irritating)

- The air conditioning went out in my car. Paid to have the freon recharged, and it all leaked back out within hours, pointing to a larger, and more expensive fix. Good thing I paid to have it refilled, got a lot of use out of it

- Laura's car just started dying in the middle of driving it. We'd be driving on the interstate, and suddenly the damn thing would just shut off. We'd pull over, start it up, and it would work fine again... until it decides to shut off again. Had a mechanic look at it, and he couldn't find anything wrong with it... but we still had to pay him, of course. He did try to talk me into having $800 of non-essential work done though... thanks, but no thanks

- The brake line got cut on Laura's car. I'm driving along on the interstate, and suddenly the brakes stop working right. I could still stop... but I had to stomp down on the brake as hard as I could for it to even register that the brakes were being pushed... then it slowed down gradually. There was no such thing as a quick stop. $$$

- Since my car has no AC, we've been putting the windows down when driving it... the freaking drivers side window just died. So now I have no AC, and no drivers window... to go along with the rear drivers side window that's been broken for a while not

- The gutter recently began falling off of our house

And to top it all off, I've been unemployed for 2 damn months, but haven't gotten any unemployment money yet, so all these stupid fixes just have to keep pushing up the balance on our credit cards. So now when we do get the money to start paying them off, tack on the interest payments. Since I got an extra check after being let go, the state had to start an investigation to find out exactly what all the money was for for some reason before I can get any unemployment benefits, which I was told could take 6-8 weeks... and they just informed me of this last week. So even though I haven't worked for 60 days now, I'm still who knows how many weeks away from getting any money

Seriously... this all has to happen now?

On the bright side... since we aren't stupid, we didn't listen to the banks when buying our house ("You only want that much? Your credit is good, we'll give you whatever you want. You should start looking at these half million dollar homes"), so we can still afford our mortgage payment. So I can't complain too much... things could be a LOT worse!
